Mayor Bob Duffy told News 10NBC’s Berkeley Brean moments ago that he is ready to negotiate a deal on Renaissance Square that will save the $24 million in federal dollars already earmarked for the project.

The mayor and City Council held a strategy meeting this morning where they decided to draft legislation that will help save the money.

The drop dead deadline for Renaissance Square is July 31. If city council doesn't act by then, the project as you know it is gone. The mayor's office doesn't believe it.

News 10NBC just spoke with Mayor Duffy's spokesman Gary Walker. He called the deadline a "scare tactic" saying City Hall does not "believe the money will be lost."

But the reality is that project leaders face a big hurdle: convincing the mayor and city council that Renaissance Square is the right project for a blighted part of Main Street.
